Oh this was bad. This was very bad, and Pen would have taken this for the first day rather than the second of working with Nathan Cross, if only because she wouldn’t be late for her date. Which, Jeff had been informed about in a string of apology texts. After dealing with several called in disturbances, a wellness check, and last but not least directing traffic on a accident that had taken place in the middle of an intersection, Penny was about ready to scream. The accident clean up had taken longer than planned, thankfully no casualties but one person had been taken to the hospital and the police were trying to narrow down what had exactly happened. By the time they were done she knew they were going to be late getting back to the precinct, but thanks to good ole L.A. traffic that time had doubled. Cutting into Penny’s getting ready time.
The moment they were out of the escalade, Penny had walked as quickly as she could; that wasn’t an outright run. Her corkscrew curls bounced with each step and she essentially left Nate in the dust. With his long legs though, he could probably keep up just fine.
Bursting through those double doors, she rushed down the aisle towards her cubicle to have her steps falter. You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me… She groaned, seeing down at the end, was her big brother with the tool box she’d asked to borrow. She’d told TJ she’d get it from him after work, and that there was no need for him to drop it off, but again...traffic. She didn’t even have time to turn and shove Nate away from TJ’s eyes, and at this point…
She was ripping the bandaid off. “Where’s the fire there, Princess?” TJ’s voice called down to her and she was already glaring as she continued her rush. “I’m late for something.” She merely told him. Reaching to take the tool box from him. Only, TJ held it up and out of her reach. “What something?” He asked again, glancing her over and doing that thing he did when he was trying to find something out of the ordinary and solve one of his many puzzles. “C’mon T, I don’t have time to play your games today.” Penny all but demanded, reaching up on her toes to try and reach for the box, that TJ just held further out of her grasp. She should consider herself lucky that his attention was still on her, and not Nate, but because that was something she didn’t want to be apart of it.
“And I’m just a brother trying to make sure his sister is alright.” He gave her that signature grin of his, and Penny’s patience ran out (it usually did when TJ was around) before she jabbed him in the stomach. As a reflex his arms lowered as he turned in on himself and she snatched the box from him. Giving him a glare, and a look that said he should have seen that one coming. “I’m perfectly fine, If you must know,” She pushed to tool box under her desk and turned to face him with her hands on her hips. “I have a date.” She started going through her desk drawers then, looking for whatever makeup she knew she had stored in it at some point when she used to go on dates with Nate.
She suddenly grew nervous then, and wanted nothing more then to hurry up and get the hell out of there. “With Jeff?” The disdain, and clear dislike of her brother's tone showed just what he thought about Jeff. Frankly, Pen didn’t have the time to get into it with him. “Yes Jeff.” She said continuing to dig through her drawers.
“And what do you pla-” TJ’s voice suddenly cut off and the cloud of Big brother protectiveness he usually had over him felt like it had just grown to the size of an atom bomb. She could already feel the tension in the air, and Pen glanced up to see TJ staring at someone. “You lost Cross?” TJ’s voice was low. That scary calm he usually had before he snapped. He looked over at her then, practically seeing that underlying rage that usually accompanied him whenever Nate was around, and she saw the questioning look on his face. It was the “Penelope you better not have done something stupid…” look.
Now she was really going to be late.
