Pen started to follow after Nate. Falling into step easily beside him. His chuckle had her raise an eyebrow. She felt a corner of her mouth quirk up slightly. “Ah yes, forgot. Classified, and you can neither confirm nor deny,” She snapped her fingers in “darn it” fashion. For being ex-military it had always been one of his favorite responses to questions he was asked. Specifically to “where did you learn that?” when he couldn’t give you a straight answer.
She noticed his expression lost some of its humor and she wondered idly if he was remembering the past they’d agreed to not bring up. Well, fuck. Now her expression had sobered as they walked the two houses down to where she’d parked the escalade on the side street. Maybe this was going to be harder than she thought. No matter how hard either of them tried, and it was already the first day and they had barely made it into an hour of working together.
Should you be that surprised? She thought to herself. This wasNate. You couldn’t just sweep four years together under the rug and pretend it didn’t happen. You couldn’t pretend that the ugly breakup hadn’t happened. Those wounds were merely scabbed over, it didn’t mean they still didn’t hurt. For both of them. Penny pursed her lips, deciding the best way to deal with it was to just let the emotions come and roll off like a wave. They were different people now in different parts of their lives. They merely had to work together, that was all.
“Well, for what it’s worth… Burelson will call you crazy, I’ll call you a genius.” She said quietly, trying to lighten the mood as they reached the escalade. “And no, I’m not repeating it.” She glanced over to him while she went to the passenger side. Once it was unlocked she opened the door and climbed in. Reaching over to grab her jacket out of the front seat and place it in her lap, before she picked up that sparkly cup, taking a sip of that tea. She reached for the sticky notes that had been tucked into the cup holder and then held them out to him. “Pick your next stop, Partner.”
