Mariella's hands shook as she went to her refrigerator and took out a can of pop. She could hardly get the tab open, and when she finally did, the loud crack made her flinch. She'd done something today, something riskier than anything she'd done on this assignment yet. Her heart had been pounding the entire time she went through that house, trying to pretend like everything was normal. Lorenzo had looked at her longer than usual, spoken to her more. She'd thought she was going to throw up on his feet, she was so nervous. But she'd made it out with the footage. She still hadn't decided if what she was doing was brave, or incredibly stupid. Maybe both. She was lucky she'd already made out her will and set aside a safety deposit box for Enrique when she took this assignment--setting those things up now would have given her away.
But that was unlucky thinking. Dominic had promised her he was putting together the perfect team. That this could be over in one fell swoop, and Lorenzo would be gone. She trusted him, or she wouldn't have done this at all. But how could she not worry? Lorenzo had made himself into a tyrant, here, killed hundreds, and they were sneaking around right in front of his face. She'd stood less than a foot from him today.
She turned to lean her butt against the kitchen counter as she sipped her drink and stared at the cheap video camera that sat on the peeling Formica tabletop. She'd watched just enough of the footage to make sure it had really recorded, and then left it there on the table, dropping it like it was burning her hands. That footage was her death warrant, and she knew it. But… it could also be her chance to change the lives of hundreds of people. Thousands, maybe. Her chance to stop the man who had ordered her father's death. She couldn't miss this chance.
The back screen door into her apartment squeaked and Mariella immediately straightened up and grabbed a knife out of the block on the counter. When she turned to see who was there, however, all the tension dropped from her shoulders immediately and she set it back on the counter with a sigh.
"Dominic. You scared me." She greeted him with a tired smile. "I've been on edge since I got up this morning...but I got it." She nodded to the camera.
