Bright blue eyes kept flickering up into the review mirror, looking at the two boys in the backseat. One was just about big enough to sit on the passenger seat, however, he was boycotting Dad at the moment. Meaning he was practicing for his teen years in rebelling against his parents, and Blake’s first act of defiance was pretending Jack didn’t exist or making it very clear he wasn’t happy with him.
Yeah, well me too bucko…
The only saving grace was Ivan of course. Trying to make everyone else happy despite the foul mood his brother had set. For only being four he was certainly an astute kid, and Jack had a feeling he and the boy’s mom would be seeing about Ivan getting tested at one of the schools. He was certainly bright, already knew his alphabet, could count pretty high, and he’d gotten out of the baby babble far faster than his brother. Not to mention Ivan just had that old soul thing going for him that made him way more observant than any four-year-old needed to be.
“You know if you keep pouting like that your face is going to stay that way.” Jack lightly commented.
“Hmph.” Came Blake’s response and Jack could see that bottom lip just stick out further and a deep valley formed between his brows. “You should be happy, your seeing Mom again.” Jack tried for conversation with his oldest son, but Blake was still giving him the silent treatment. He sighed, reaching up to rub a hand over his face while the AC was going in his Silverado truck. He stopped at a stop sign, looking both ways as they neared the familiar neighborhood that the boys lived in for five days out of the week. The same neighborhood Jack used to live in before he left.
That was a can of worms in and of itself. Something he didn’t want to think about but knew he didn’t have a choice if he was going to see his estranged wife in five minutes.
The transferring of the prisoners, Blake called it. Clearly enjoying the fact his parents were separated and that he didn’t fully understand why.
“Daddy, are we seeing you again on Saturday?” Ivan’s voice piped up from the booster seat across from Blake.
“Nupe, you’re seeing me Wednesday and Thursday this coming week. My shift alternates every other week.” He explained. It was a pain in the ass but at least Jade got the kids every other weekend so Jack wasn’t hogging them. Not like two days out of seven was hogging though…
“Yaaaay!” Came his little cheer, and a corner of Jack’s mouth turned up. He could hear clapping and glanced back in the review to see Ivan’s bright grin. At least one of his sons was happy to see him. “Booooo,” Blake finally spoke up, but it was a less enthusiastic one. Merely doing it to annoy his brother. Before any backlash could begin the house came into view. The second one from the corner, it was a two-story Colonial-style house, with dark blue siding and white trim. The front door was a boring white color, that Jack had once thought about painting in a bright color to make the door pop, but he had never had the time for it.
He honked the horn as he pulled up to the curb so Jade would know they’d arrived, and Blake was already out of the back of the truck, hopping down, slamming his door and running around the back end and to the front door. “Bye Blake, nice to see you too.” He muttered under his breath while he walked around the front. Tucking strands of his long, curly hair behind his ears before he opened the back door. Holding his hands out for Ivan, who was waiting for him.
In typical Ivan fashion, he bent his little legs from where he’d unbuckled himself and then leaped forward in a superman pose. Jack caught him easily and groaned as if the little boy weighed a ton before he swung him around and placed him on his hip. Holding him with one arm, he reached in for the boy’s backpacks. Grabbing both straps with a hand before he turned to face the house.
