You had to be fucking kidding. No no, no, NO. This was not happening. Despite the calm facade, she’d put on in front of Captains Burelson and Juarez, Penny was not cool as a cucumber. She was freaking out on the inside. They wanted her to what?
“One more complaint he’s done. We can't do this anymore. You're his last chance.”
If her ex-boyfriend had any hopes in ever returning to the task force, or even keeping his job, he would have to work. With her. Was this not her own punishment? “We know it’ll be...awkward, but if anyone can get him on his feet, it’s you.”
She’d tried that already. She tried to tell them as such, but the captains seemed to think she could do it. Did they not realize what they were asking? What this would do to her? You moved on Pen, you’ll be fine. You can be professional. She told herself. After a very long, much-needed margarita, and a needed vent session with a good friend.
After texting Lisette, who she could have just taken the short walk to go see; but knew the other woman was busy, Penny threw herself into preparing for tomorrow’s fun of having to deal with Nate.
When work was done, she drove over to her and Lisette’s favorite place and found their usual table. Ordering for the both of them, Penny made sure to get her blackberry margarita as big as they came and with a shot of spiced rum to accompany it.
When Lisette showed up, she’d find Pen sitting at the table holding her face in her hands.

Liz was always happy to hang out with Pen and get updates on her life, but she had a bit of a bad feeling about this one. When she saw her friend sitting at the table with her head in her hands, all her worries were confirmed. She stood up a little straighter, walked a little faster, and sat down with a look of grim determination.
"Ay, get that head up, chica. No moping in the bar. Tell me all about it and we'll get to work cracking heads, hm?" She spoke with confident authority and just a hint of scolding as she slid into the booth, set aside her purse and took up her matching margarita in its place.
"Whose tires you need me to slash, eh? That Jeff guy?" A casual question about vandalism followed by a deep sip of her margarita. Always fun to propose committing a crime directly to a detective.
Lisette Reyez didn't hesitate to defend her family, and Penny was family. Whoever had the bad taste to mess with this sweet ray of sunshine was going to find out that they'd messed with the wrong woman.
Penny heard Liz's approach and raised her head. Giving her a look that clearly read she was having a day mixed with a child-like pout. "Oh I would love to crack heads." She mumbled, only problem, cracking those heads would get her fired. She played with the straw to the margarita and let sigh out. Despite her mood, Lisette was welcome company, and she put a small smile on Penny's face as she took a sip of the drink.
"Jeff's great," She said quickly. And he really was. She'd had no problems with him since they met and the few dates they'd been on so far. He was sweet, thoughtful, an uber dork- but it was something she found endearing about him. Especially watching how excited he could get. Jeff was the type of guy you settled on and brought home to mama. The complete opposite of Nathan Cross. Who, by the way, she'd be working with indefinitely starting tomorrow.
With a drawn out sigh, Pen fixed her eyes on Liz. "Burelson and Juarez came to me earlier today. They're assigning me a partner from the task force they essentially want me to babysit." She said starting to fill her in. She looked down at her drink, using the straw to push around the icecubes. "Which normally would be fine, but-" Penny grimaced, and a flash of pain crossed her face just thinking about it. "It's Nate." She said quietly. Liz would know aaaaallll about Nate. Him and Pen had dated for four years, and the last year had been a strain on their relationship as it had been after Michael had died. Penny had tried everything to get Nate to open up to her, and in the end she'd decided to leave him. Only, the two had an argument as Nate caught her leaving and it resulted in him admitting he didn't want a relationship with her anymore. It'd hurt more then she realized.
Penny might not look it, given her usual calm and collected appearance and personality, but she took things harder then most. She was an extreme empath and that break up had nearly destroyed her. Now a year later she was hoping to move on with someone like Jeff, only...Burelson and Juarez were throwing her a monkey wrench.
"I tried talking to them out of it, but they're insistent. If he wants to keep his job Liz, I'm the one that gets final say. I'm pretty much his last chance, how can I tell them no?" She asked, looing at Lisette with conflict clear on her face. Despite what happened, Nate was still a good cop, and Penny knew that. And maybe a part of her still and would always care about that idiot...

Liz's eyebrows rose when the task force was mentioned, and they about climbed off her face when she heard that it was exactly the asshole she'd been worried about. How in their right minds could any of the leads really think that putting Nate and Penny together again was a good idea? They must have been snorting the evidence, or something.
"So I'm guessing you're not okay with just telling them to fire him?" she asked flatly, knowing the answer was going to be 'absolutely not.' For just a minute, she wished her dear friend wasn't quite so good. It would be so satisfying to just tell them to get rid of the guy instead of burdening a woman with him. But of course, they needed someone to blame for the final decision, and they were making it Penny's problem.
Lisette sighed. "Drink up, chica, you clearly need it," she ordered, tapping Penny's dress with one of her acrylic nails. "What's the plan? You gonna start him out with ground rules?"
No, she wasn’t okay with them firing him, and Penny didn’t even have to say it. Her face said it for her as she sucked on that straw. She gave her head a shake. “Our relationship aside, he’s a good cop Liz. He’s gone through so many partners they lost count, though his last one seemed to handle him just fine. They think I can “fix” him, but-“ she huffed a small bitter laugh. “Already tried that, and I clearly failed.” She muttered, twirling the straw in the drink. She watched the nice turn with the current the straw made in the glass, and then glanced up at Lisette.
Nodding at her question about ground rules. “I have too if I’m going to be made to work with him. Strictly professional, my way or the highway.” She said more to herself than her friend. “I just hope he takes this seriously, but because the sooner he gets his act straight the sooner he can go back.” She voiced.
A darker part of Penny thought about how he’d react to seeing her. How he probably wouldn’t be that beaten up about it considering that he was the one that didn’t want to be with her. If anything Penny would be licking her wounds still. Which she’d never admitted that she was. “If I end up killing him, help me get rid of the evidence?” Penny asked a corner of her lips quirked up slightly.
