The day was cloudy, but it didn't rain. She was anticipating it, she could feel this heavy sense of dread just looming over her as her father's funeral progressed.
Harper didn't hear the priest speaking, didn't listen to the kind words that his business partner had to say- it was all whitenoise to her right now as she stared at the lowering coffin. It was nothing but the wind and the muffled sounds of sobbing people.
Eyes blinked, freeing the unshed tears as they slipped down her cheeks, and she glanced around at all of those gathered. Harp didn't recognize more than half of these people. Not that she was heavily acquainted with her father's friends and employees. She had kept herself out of the hotel business despite the fact that she was told she would inherit it, a fact that Patricia didn't very much like.
That was when her gaze drifted sidelong, finding the woman apparently tearing up behind a veil of black lace. Harper gritted her teeth, and suddenly, the priest's final words had ended and there were whispered voices all around her.
It was over. Squeezing Amber's hand, she walked alongside her sister to toss their flowers into the grave. Then there was a suited gentleman coming to her side. He was security, something she was far too used to. Even the local police were there to monitor things and keep the paparazzi away.
"Please, come with me, miss." He was taking her by the arm as another was escorting her sister to the car.
Still in a daze, Harper nodded and thanked him, immediately regretting again that she wore tall heels to walk on unstable ground. She was reminded of how much of a bad idea it was when her heel sunk straight into the dirt and Harper felt herself going down.
Just a second before a loud shot rang out.
It seemed to echo in her ears as everything else was silent again. She was on her side in the grass that was still damp with the morning dew...and there was a warmth that had splashed across the side of her face. There was screaming all around her, she saw people rushing passed frantically. With a turn of her head, she came face to face with the bodyguard who had been escorting her.
A bullet hole in his temple.
Suddenly screaming until her throat was sore, both security and the police were rushing to her and her family's side to try and get them to safety.
