"pick up, pick up, pick up...."
It took a couple of rings, but eventually he picked up. She'd hear the tail end of him telling someone goodbye and the faint sounds of voices in the background. "Hello?" He hadn't looked at the name on the screen before answering.
"Danny!" Jocelyn almost shouted, then quieted down as she continues. "Look, are you in town? Please say you're in town."
At the way she said his name, he was immediately standing up straighter. Pulling the cell away, he double-checked the name on the screen but he knew that voice. "Yeah, yeah, what's going on? You alright?"
"For the moment, yeah." Some rustling sounded from the background and the signature crinkling sound of cheap blinds. "¡Qué vaina! That fucking--" She cuts off and clears her throat. "Listen. Ah... Fuck, I don't know where to start..." She hesitates and sighs. "You know that guy, Dunn, right? The one who's always hanging around, bullying Papa and hitting on me?"
Danny refrained from sighing. "Yeah, what about him?" Something told him he wasn't going to like where this was going. He was already headed towards his car after cleaning up after his latest meeting.
"I'm sorry, I--I really fucked this up. He's been harassing me so bad I lied and said I had a boyfriend. And he goes 'Well how come I haven't seen him?' so I said that my boyfriend traveled for work, so I didn't get to see him often." She started talking faster and faster, her irritation and sass showing in the way she mimicked Jimmy's voice.
"And he kept pushing, like, oh he's not treating you right, you must be hungry for a real man. So I said no, that I was happy. and he kept pushing about who it was and all that. Well, I put him off for a few weeks, but he kept going on. He fucking made reservations at some fancy restaurant for us, wouldn't take no for an answer. So I told him I already had another date. He kept pushing, saying he could fight whoever it was, and then I'd see he was better, or some shit... So I um..." You could almost hear the wince in her voice. "I said it was you. Because you kicked his ass in your last match."
"Aaaaand now he's hanging around outside, trying to catch me lying."
If this had been any other time, he might have found her rambling amusing. Normally it was cute, but the worry and aggravation in her tone made him listen intently. Nope, he definitely didn't like where this was going but Danny didn't interrupt, patiently waiting for her to get to the point. He was getting into his car and shutting the door just in time to hear, I said it was you. "Wha-?" She kept going and he ran a hand down his face. Oh, Joss. "Alright, alright. You home or at the gym?" He started up the car.
Her sigh of relief was definitely audible. "The gym. I was getting everything cleaned up and closed up since Dad's knees are acting up." She paused, then added on. "Thank you, seriously. You don't have to do anything but pick me up, okay? I'll just run out and hop in with you. I don't want this pendejo starting anything with you. He just...he's lurking out there in his stupid Hummer, watching the parking lot. There's no way I'd make it to my car."
The fact that she was calling him about this was telling him that the situation wasn't going to stop, that Jimmy wasn't going to just walk away. One could hope but Danny wasn't holding his breath. Still, he wouldn't worry her with that over the phone. "It's okay, Joss. Just keep the door locked until I get there. Should be there in less than ten. Is it just him out there?"
"I think so? I can't see inside the car. He's got fucking illegal tinted windows, the asshole. But don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. For once I'm glad we have the tacky ass chicken wire in the glass."
Danny finally laughed a little, pulling out onto the road. "Good. Hang tight, doll, I'll be right there."
"Gracias. See you soon." [Click]

Or at least, she had been using it to check on things until fucking Jimmy Dunn started knocking on all the doors and windows, calling her name.
Well, not her name. "Josie" was what he called her like he thought it was some cute pet name. It made her want to puke.
"Josie…! Come out, come out, wherever you are!"[/i] the Irishman called out in a singsong voice, acting playful. "It's not polite to keep a man waiting."
She pressed against the wall next to the window, making sure that even if he peered through a crack in the ragged old blinds, he wouldn't see her moving around.
Didn't this guy know he was being a fucking stalker? The last time he'd tried to hang around after close, she'd threatened to call the cops…and he laughed in her face. He said the cops around here wouldn't care what happened to her…and he was probably right. Everyone around here knew the cops didn't come out to Washington Park unless they were planning to shoot somebody--or to score some drugs for themselves. The locals had learned a long time ago that the local gangs were more likely to protect them than the police. For the right price, obviously.
"Josie, I'm getting impatient!" Jimmy called, right next to her, and the pounding of his fist on the window made her jump in spite of herself. "I know you girls like to play hard to get, but this is fuckin--"
He stopped, distracted by something, and Jocelyn strained her ears to hear.
Another car's engine. Danny Miller .
Who in the hell…?" Jimmy grumbled, and she heard him shuffling away from the window.
Fuck. He was out of the car, which meant he was probably headed straight for Danny's window.
She rushed to grab her keys off the desk and throw her bag over her shoulder, then half ran to the back door. Thank god it didn't have to be locked manually. She didn't have time.
She made herself slow down to a normal pace as she rounded the corner into the parking lot, putting on a big smile and waving to Danny as she approached--like she didn't even know that Jimmy was there, making a beeline for Danny's car as she did so.
Everything's fine. Everything's totally normal. Perfectly fine.
